Jeffrey Russell, MS, DiplAc

Jeffrey Russell, MS, DiplAc, is a nationally-licensed acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist. He completed his four-year Master of Science degree in traditional Chinese medicine at the Academy of Chinese Culture and Health Science in Oakland, CA. Throughout his twelve years of independent practice, Russell has continued to deepen and extend his knowledge of the theory and practice of acupuncture and herbal medicine through classes, apprenticeship and personal study.

After completing the available continuing education courses, he went on to intern in the renowned Dr. Jimmy Wei-Yen Chang’s private clinic. Dr. Chang is highly respected by senior practitioners around the world for his clinical diagnostic techniques and compounded herbal medicine prescriptions. Russell travels to Dr. Chang’s clinic in Los Angeles several times a year to work with him one on one, and has observed thousands of patients there. You can hear Dr. Chang speak about his practices in the videos below.

Russell is able to effectively treat patients by drawing from both Dr. Chang’s deep well of knowledge of herbal medicine and traditional medicine theory and an understandings of modern medicine. Dr. Chang has an unparalleled ability to draw from multiple “original source” texts and oral traditions, as well as his own experience. Chinese herbal compound medicine has always been passed down in succession for master to disciple. This is indeed the only way to learn the many subtleties and nuances of using herbal medicine to effectively treat complex clinical realities. You can hear Dr. Chang discuss his practices in the videos below.

Jeffrey Russell employs acupuncture methods passed down from the great doctor of Chinese Medicine, Grand Master Tung (董景昌大師) [pronounced Dong] Master Tung’s approach to acupuncture treatment is a highly effective system that uses points distal to the affected area. This ancient system survived the Cultural Revolution and the movement to “systemize” acupuncture in 1960s China, and therefore differs significantly from the “westernized” version of acupuncture taught by most colleges and universities today in Western and Asian academic institutions. Dr. Young Wei-Chieh is the foremost teacher and practitioner of this style. Susan Johnson, L.Ac. is has played a pivotal role in teaching and practicing Tung’s acupuncture in the United States and is Russell’s main teacher for this style.

Russell is grateful to have been able to serve the Louisville community for the past nine years and endeavors to faithfully apply the knowledge and wisdom of the tradition of Chinese medicine. He can be reached at his clinic Abacus Chinese Medicine–Louisville Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine.
