Treatment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS)

The human fascial system is an intricate network of connective tissue that plays a vital role in maintaining the body’s structural integrity and facilitating movement. It surrounds and supports muscles, organs, nerves, and bones, providing both structure and mobility. Fascia is essential for maintaining flexibility, mobility, and postural alignment. When dysfunctions arise in this system, such as in conditions like Thoracic Outlet Syndrome (TOS), significant discomfort and health issues develop.
TOS and Tight Fascia
TOS occurs when nerves or blood vessels become compressed in the thoracic outlet, which is the space between the collarbone and the first rib. This compression results in symptoms like pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness in the shoulders, arms, and hands. One of the key contributors to TOS is tight fascia, especially in the muscles of the neck, chest, and upper back. When the fascia in these areas becomes overly tight, it can create pressure on the nerves and blood vessels passing through the thoracic outlet, exacerbating the symptoms of TOS. The compression not only disrupts the normal flow of neural and circulatory signals but also restricts the body’s ability to move freely.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) for TOS
Craniosacral Therapy is one of the primary treatment modalities used at Abacus Chinese Medicine to treat TOS. It is an effective treatment for the condition as it focuses on the fascia and nervous system with a gentle, holistic approach. CST works by enhancing the craniosacral rhythm, a subtle, rhythmic movement of cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Practitioners use light touch to release restrictions in the fascial system, particularly in the neck and thoracic outlet area. By doing so, CST helps to reduce the compression on the nerves and improve circulation, alleviating the symptoms of TOS. The therapy aims to restore the natural flow of energy throughout the body, promoting healing and relieving tension in the fascia that contributes to TOS.
Manual Adjustments
Manual adjustment using osteopathic principles is also effective primary treatment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome for TOS. They employ gentle spinal and joint manipulations to help realign the body, reduce muscle tension, and relieve stress on the thoracic outlet. Since misalignments in the spine, rib cage, and shoulder girdle often contribute to restricted movement and nerve compression. By addressing these misalignments, manual adjustments can help improve posture, enhance nerve function, and reduce the impact of TOS symptoms.
Combined Methods of Treatment for Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
When craniosacral therapy and manual adjustments are combined, they work synergistically to address the root causes of TOS. The release of fascial tension, along with the restoration of structural balance, allows the body to heal more effectively. This combination therapy provides a non-invasive and holistic solution to managing TOS, offering relief from pain and discomfort while improving overall mobility and well-being. Ultimately, both craniosacral therapy and manual adjustments provide a comprehensive approach to treating Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. By targeting the fascial system and addressing any spinal misalignments, these therapies not only reduce compression on nerves and blood vessels but also enhance the body’s ability to heal itself naturally. This approach helps individuals with TOS regain movement and function, improving their quality of life without the need for invasive procedures or long-term medication use.
At Abacus Chinese Medicine, we practice an integrative treatment approach, using a range of therapies in-house, and also working along with treatment plans you may have from other healthcare providers. The two modalities discussed here are just an example of how we combine methods to suit individual needs.
If you would like to discuss such treatment, or that for any other health concerns, book an appointment with Jeffrey Russell here.
